These e-mails about the SunSplash Tanning System will tell the story:
E-mail from me to the Mercola.com customer service team:
Hello, I purchased the SunSplash Tanning System and have been using it for 10 minutes daily for over 3 months. After those 3 months I had my vitamin D tested and it was only 26 ng/mL [optimal is around 50 ng/mL]! Is there something I’m doing wrong? Did I receive a defective product? Please contact me because I am very concerned that this very expensive purchase I made does not work. Thank you.
Reply from the Mercola.com customer service team:
I am so sorry to hear that you are having issues receiving the results that you were looking for. I would recommend that you follow the directions in the manual. For instance, have you been standing about an inch away from the tanning bed? The further you stand away the less effective the bed will be. In addition, the recommendation is 10 minutes on both your front side and back side, so 20 total minutes per session, every 48 hours. Please try following these steps and then have your vitamin D levels tested again. I am so sorry for all of the problems that you have had thus far.
Well, they might be on to something. I wasn’t standing 1 inch away, probably more like 4 inches. And I definitely wasn’t using it for 10 minutes on each side.
Another thing I noticed is that a lot of dust had accumulated on my SunSplash Tanning System’s bulbs. So I wiped it off and started using it again, according to their recommendations. It certainly did seem to work a lot better…I actually got burned a bit
.
However, it is summer now, and it makes a lot more sense to start using the natural sun to get my vitamin D than an artificial tanning system. The full review may still have to wait until next winter…but I will wait as long as it takes to make sure I give this thing a fair and accurate review.

Thanks for your update. I look forward to the new results after the summer. Its so good of you to share your unbiased opinion before the rest of us make the investment. In the meantime, I’m still going to the tanning salon and hope I’m not doing myself any harm with the EMF’s.
Hi Jesse,
I was glad to find that you are reviewing Mercola’s sunlamp system. Over the Fourth of July weekend, he had a 10% off sale and I ordered the Vitamin D lamp. But less than 24 hours later, I called to cancel the order. It’s such an investment and I guess I need more proof that it works before I spend the money. So I appreciate whatever information you can provide. I have been getting the natural sun as much as possible this summer (I live in central IL) and am pretty tanned. But I really just want to get my vitamin D levels up and don’t really care about tanning. I will have my Vitamin D levels tested in about 5 weeks to see if the sun is helping. I have been in the 20’s myself and really need to get up to 50 or higher if I can. I don’t seem to tolerate prescription Vit. D or cod liver oil. I do take a powedered form of D3 from Pure Encapsulations and I take about 800-1000 units a day.
Looking forward to learning your future test results.
Thanks, Liz
