How to Eat Healthy on Vacation - Day 1

So I have taken a bit of an excursion from my home base and decided to start a log of my attempt to eat healthy while on vacation.

Right now I am eating a combination of the paleo diet with nutritional typing / metabolic typing. I believe this is one of the healthiest diets anyone can possibly eat. I generally feel great and never (seriously never) get sick eating like this.

Under the nutritional typing system I am a protein type, so you will see a lot of meat in the following meal logs. Remember, these meals are just customized for my unique metabolism, so not everyone should eat as much meat as I do.

Sticking to this sort of diet can be tough when you can’t prepare your own food. Eating out all the time is basically the name of the game when you’re on vacation. So is it possible to eat healthy while eating out all the time? Honestly, I don’t really know for sure. But let’s find out…

Here was my first meal of the day while on vacation:

How to Eat Healthy While On Vacation - Meal 1

This was from a Chinese buffet. I actually took this picture after I ate most of my meal…so what is missing is a lot more of that big piece of meat which is pork, a pork kabob with veggies (this place was big on pork…), and some more honey dew melon.

Basically I ate a lot of meat, some veggies and some fruit. The meal was very satisfying and kept my energy and mood high for quite some time.

Problems with this meal? Well, there was probably some gluten somewhere in there. And most likely some hidden MSG as well…almost all restaurants these days have hidden MSG in their food.

This will be an ongoing theme for these meals. Almost all of them will have some gluten and some hidden MSG in them. This is the main problem with eating out all the time. The question is, can you still be relatively healthy with these things in your food on a regular basis?

Here is my second meal, which was really just a snack:

Mmm…beef jerky. Definitely had hidden MSG, definitely had gluten in the soy sauce…and of course the soy sauce had soy, which is not so good. Nonetheless, it was a pretty good choice all things considered, and made my body pretty happy.

Most people on vacation snack on total crap like candy bars, soda, chips, etc….so really this was quite a good option.

Here was my third meal:

This meal was ridiculously delicious. It came from room service…I love room service. I completely devoured that steak and finished off all the asparagus as well. It was so good I wanted more actually.

This meal was probably the healthiest of them all, but still you have to ask the question, was there any hidden MSG in the spices and sauces they used? Funnily enough, food that tastes really good, often does have hidden MSG in it…that is why it tastes so good.

Regardless, I consider this meal quite a success and the whole day went pretty well as far as healthy eating is concerned.

I’ll keep blogging the rest of my days…I can’t guarantee I’ll get around to doing it every day with the unpredictability of vacations and all, but I’ll get around to posting a log of every day eventually. Stay tuned…
